Born in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1958, Jens spent his youth in the coastal Maine town of Kennebunk. Kennebunk's shipbuilding and seafaring heritage attracted Jens to the sea, which led to his matriculation at and graduation from Maine Maritime Academy (B.S.,1980). Jens achieved the rank of U.S. Merchant Marine, Third Mate, 1980.

After graduating the Maritime Academy, Jens sailed three years aboard petro-chemical tankers, commercial fishing trawlers and other ocean going vessels. Later, he taught Physics and other science and mathematics courses, and coached soccer, at Cheverus High School, a private Jesuit school for boys located in Portland. Jens matriculated at the University of Maine School of Law (J.D., 1988), and was admitted to the Maine bar in 1988, and the U.S. District Court, District of Maine in 1990.

Jens is a member of the York County and Maine State Bar Associations and the Maine Trial Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club, York Lodge No. 22 A.F. and A.M., the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce and an active member (and past secretary to the Council) of St. Martha's Catholic Parish.

Jens and his wife, of nineteen years, Francesca, are the proud parents of three children. They enjoy considerable family time together.
